Army Develops Tiny Device to Detect Circulatory Shock

 Army researchers have developed a tiny device designed to detect circulatory shock from blood loss that’s common in trauma patients.

For years, researchers at the Army Institute of Surgical Research at Fort Sam Houston, Texas have been trying to measure the body’s capacity to compensate for blood loss, also known as the compensatory reserve.

Human Trials Begin for Army-Developed Zika Vaccine

WASHINGTON, Nov. 8, 2016 — A clinical trial began here yesterday at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, where 75 participating healthy adults were vaccinated with a Zika virus vaccine that the institute’s scientists developed earlier this year, Walter Reed officials announced today.

HIV Response Among Adolescents

Today, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and representatives from UNAIDS, UNICEF, UNFPA, WHO, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, the MTV Staying Alive Foundation along with youth movements represented by PACT and Y+ convened in Nairobi, Kenya to launch ALL IN – a platform for action to end AIDS among adolescents. At the event, PEPFAR was represented by U.S. Ambassador to Kenya, Robert F. Godec, who participated in a panel discussion with representatives from the Government of Kenya and international organizations committed to an AIDS-free generation.

Prescription Opioid Deaths Level; Heroin-related Deaths Rise

Washington, D.C.  – Today, the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) is announcing the 2013 drug overdose mortality data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The data show that drug deaths related to prescription opioids have remained stable since 2012, but the mortality rate associated with heroin increased for the third year in a row.

California Firm Agrees to Stop Production of Adulterated and Misbranded Dietary Supplements and Unapproved New Drugs

As a result of a lawsuit filed by the United States, a federal court in California has issued an injunction shutting down Health One Pharmaceuticals Inc., a City of Industry, California, based manufacturer of dietary supplements and unapproved new drugs.  The firm and its president, Richard S. Yeh, agreed to shut down and resolve the lawsuit as part of a consent decree.  The Justice Department filed the injunction action in the Central District of California at the request of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Justice Department Settles with Ohio Healthcare System Over HIV Discrimination

The Justice Department announced today that, as part of its Barrier-Free Health Care Initiative, the department has reached a settlement with Genesis Healthcare System (Genesis) to resolve claims that Genesis discriminated against a woman with HIV in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  Genesis operates a healthcare system that includes a hospital, a network of more than 300 physicians, and multiple outpatient health care centers throughout southeastern Ohio.

Ambulance Company Manager Pleads Guilty to $5.5 Million Medicare Fraud Conspiracy

The general manager of a Southern California ambulance company pleaded guilty yesterday in Los Angeles to conspiracy to commit Medicare fraud, conspiracy to obstruct a Medicare audit, and making materially false statements to law enforcement officers.
