DoD Approves $25 Million Grant to the State of Texas and

U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Approves $25 Million Grant to the State of Texas and a $7.3 Million Grant to the State of Maryland. For Transportation Improvements, and a $37,134,368 Grant to Lawton Public Schools to Replace Schools on Fort Sill, Okla.  Secretary of Defense Leon E. Panetta announced today three grants from the Office of Economic Adjustment, including a $25 million grant to the Texas Department of Transportation to improve access to the San Antonio Military Medical Center; a $7.3 million grant to the Maryland Department of Transportation, State Highway Administration to improve access to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, Md.; and a $37,134,368 grant to Lawton Public Schools, Lawton, Okla. to replace two old elementary schools on Fort Sill with a single new school.

Alaska - A Hong Kong-based jewelry exporter pleaded guilty Friday to customs fraud charges and faces nearly $2 million in fines and restitution in a scheme discovered by U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) officers and import specialists working in Anchorage Alaska. CBP's Regulatory Audit Unit confirmed and expanded initial findings which were then investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).

SEC Charges Attorney and Two Other South Florida Residents in $27.5 Million Investment Fraud

Washington, D.C., Sept. 5, 2012The Securities and Exchange Commission today charged an attorney and two others living in South Florida for their roles in a $27.5 million investment scheme that led investors to believe they were purchasing securities consisting of “pre-sold” commodities contracts with a pre-determined profit. However, the supposed profits actually distributed to investors were largely taken from other investors’ funds.

Douglas F. Vaughan Sentenced to 12 Years for Federal Wire and Mail Fraud Charges Involving Ponzi Scheme

ALBUQUERQUE This afternoon in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Chief United States District Judge Bruce D. Black sentenced Douglas F. Vaughan, 64, of Albuquerque, to 12 years in federal prison for wire and mail fraud charges that involved a Ponzi scheme in which Vaughan fraudulently obtained more than $74 million from approximately 600 investors who were promised extraordinary returns. Vaughan will be on supervised release for six years after he completes his prison sentence.

Two Chinese Nationals Charged with Stealing Trade Secrets from Missouri Manufacturing Plant

KANSAS CITY, MO:   Two Chinese nationals were charged in federal court today with attempting to pay $100,000 for stolen trade secrets from Pittsburgh Corning, which has a manufacturing plant in Sedalia, Missouri, that produces FOAMGLAS, announced David M. Pacific Health Corporation and Related Entities Agree to Pay $16.5 Million for Allegedly Engaging in an Illegal Kickback Scheme

 Affiliated Hospitals Paid Recruiters to Deliver Homeless Medicare/Medi-Cal Beneficiaries to the Facilities 
WASHINGTON – The United States has entered into a settlement agreement with Pacific Health Corporation (PHC) and related entities in which they agreed to pay the government and the state of California $16.5 million for allegedly engaging in an illegal kickback scheme in Los Angeles, the Justice Department announced today. The civil settlement resolves a U.S. and state investigation of three PHC-affiliated hospitals for engaging in a scheme in which the hospitals paid recruiters to deliver homeless Medicare or Medi-Cal beneficiaries (homeless beneficiaries) by ambulance from the “Skid Row” area in Los Angeles to the hospitals for treatment that often was medically unnecessary.
