Border Patrol Mustang Revisits Mains Elementary School in Calexico

General News

Last year at a ceremony, Mains Elementary assisted the El Centro Sector Horse Patrol Unit in naming a newly acquired mustang. The school selected the name Trojan after the School’s mascot. At the naming ceremony Chief Patrol Agent Jeffrey Calhoon had promised to bring Trojan back to Mains Elementary if they received good test scores. Fulfilling that promise in recognition of the students' hard work, Trojan was brought back to the school.

US and China team up for Counter-Piracy exercise

GULF OF ADEN (September 19, 2012) — Guided-missile destroyer USS Winston S. Churchill (DDG 81) and other U.S. Navy assets participated in a counter-piracy exercise withelements of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (Navy) PL(N) near the Horn of Africa, Sept. 17. The exercise, the first bilateral counter-piracy exercise ever conducted between the U.S. and China, paired Winston S. Churchill with PLA(N) frigate Yi Yang (FF 548) to conduct a combined visit, board, search, and seizure (VBSS) boarding.

Coast Guard training disrupted by laser

DEPOE BAY, Ore. — A Coast Guard helicopter crew’s training mission near Depoe Bay on Sept. 12 was disrupted when a green laser lit up the cockpit.
Green and red lasers pose a significant hazard to flight and boatcrews, especially when the helicopter crews are operating at low altitude at night or the boatcrews are battling treacherous conditions.

MAYPORT, Fla
. — The Coast Guard Cutter Maria Bray and crew returned to their homeport at Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville in Atlantic Beach, Fla., Thursday morning following a 30-day deployment during which crewmembers were directly engaged in operations involving 75 Cuban migrants.

Boaters are reminded to be safe Columbus Day weekend

 TAMPA — The Coast Guard would like to encourage boaters to enjoy their Columbus Day weekend on the water safely.
Coast Guard crews, including many from the Coast Guard Auxiliary, will be patrolling the area, conducting safety checks both on the water and at marinas. Crews will be on the lookout for boaters who are intoxicated or operating their vessel in an unsafe manner.

Coast Guard repatriates 11 Cuban migrants

MIAMI — The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Pea Island repatriated 11 Cuban migrants to Bahia de Cabañas, Cuba, Thursday.
The 11 Cuban migrants were interdicted at sea during two separate cases.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Key West, Fla., received notification from Carnival Cruise Ship Destiny of a rustic vessel with eight Cuban migrants aboard, south of Key West, Sept. 30. The Coast Guard cutter Escanaba crew was diverted and safely embarked the eight Cuban migrants. The eight migrants were all later transferred to the Pea Island for repatriation.

Roger J. Kiley, 42, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officer Pleads Guilty to Impersonating U.S. Customs Attaché

 WASHINGTON – A supervisory customs and border protection officer pleaded guilty today in the Southern District of Florida to impersonating a U.S. Customs attaché and making false statements related to his assignment with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Preclearance Office in Dublin, announced Assistant Attorney General Lanny A. Breuer of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division and U.S. Attorney Wifredo A. Ferrer for the Southern District of Florida.
