On February 22, 1995, the President of the United States ordered declassification of satellite intelligence photography collected from 1960 through 1972. These photographs comprise a unique record of the condition of the planet in the years prior to civilian space borne imaging. Because the desire to detect environmental change is usually hampered by the relatively short time period of available observations and by natural variability, it is expected that this collection of early photographs will make a significant contribution to efforts to identify and quantify environmental change.
